Campeche Travel Guide
Campeche, the beautiful capital of the state that shares the same name, is a perfect example of a viceroyal port city. In the surroundings of Campeche, there are lots of interesting places for the tourist to visit. The haciendas, several archaeological zones and the "petenes" (islets located on mangrove areas) are some of the many sites you can visit such as their cobbled streets, colonial buildings and 17th and 18th century Spanish military architecture have turned the city into a World Cultural Heritage.

If you are wondering why this city is considered a Cultural Heritage Site, you only have to look to the fortresses by the sea. There are seven in all and have become one of the distinctive symbols of Campeche. Imagine stone strongholds overlooking the sea, drawbridges lowering and cannonballs whizzing by from a pirate attack and you've got a pretty good idea about the essence that makes this city so beautiful. The view can be nicely complemented with some of the regional cuisine, which normally includes seafood.

In the areas surrounding Campeche, several archeological zones with beautiful Maya constructions can be found.

During your Campeche vacations, we strongly recommend you to visit interesting places such as Edzna, important in engineering and architectural advances featuring conduits and dams that were used by the inhabitants to collect and distribute water.
